“Live your best life.” These words have been thrown around like confetti recently in our culture. While I agree it’s super important to live your best life and seek happiness and fulfillment, this statement and the underlying tone it portrays focuses more on the individual, and leaves out the collective.
There’s a lot of benefit to living your most awesome life, but there’s also a shadow side to that.
If you’re only focused on yourself, you’re overlooking your fellow humans. You’re bypassing the bigger picture. What are you here to do? Are you here to just look out for yourself? Or, are you here to contribute and make an impact?
When I think of living my most awesome life, that also includes being of service to something.
When you’re in service, it feels affirming, especially if you’re doing the thing you’re here to do. And you’re doing it because it feels awesome–not because it makes you a ton of money, or it gets you enumerable, growing, expanded likes on social media.
When you’re in service through intrinsic motivation, it’s life-affirming; when you’re in service to an extrinsic motivation, it tends to be taxing over time, and, therefore, life-exhausting. If you’re constantly doing something, whether it’s passion-driven or obligation-driven, in order to receive external validation, then you’re constantly chasing something outside of yourself. However, if you’re doing that thing because it feels awesome inside, then it’s going to continue to feed you.
Whatever it is that feeds you, that’s part of what you’re here to do. And once you figure that out, once you get clear on your passion and purpose, then it’s time to integrate that into the collective, to be of service.
And this is a big reason why I am such an advocate for integration.
Integration does not just apply to medicine work–integration applies to all areas of life.
Integration is a key factor in your awakening process and fulfillment, for one of the cardinal needs and drives that we have as humans is contribution.
Until next time, wishing you a happy week ahead!
